September 16, 2024 — Going on a cruise is one of the most popular experiences for retirees of all ages. But there are so many cruise lines, and they go to so many places, river cruises and ocean cruises – which one is the best for you?
To see what Topretirements Members think we have come up with 2 different polls. The first one is this week, “What is your favorite cruise line?”. We have listed many of the most popular companies, and given you the opportunity to add a write-in favorite. As one Commenter noted, more of these companies offer ocean cruises than river cruises. If you don’t see your favorite company, choose “Other” and write it in so we can count it.
Please vote for your choice below, you will get to see the instant results as soon as you do. Feel free to add comments about your various experiences, and why you like (or dislike) one or more of these cruise lines.
Here is the link to the second poll, what is your favorite cruise destination?

These are ocean-going cruise lines. What about the very popular river cruise lines? I enjoy both types.

Great comment Lawrence. We have tweaked the list to add a few more river cruise companies, which are very popular. Use the "other" option and let us know via Comments the name of your favorite cruise company, ocean or river (or both!)

I can not recommend Taulk highly enough for river cruises. Traveling solo, the single supplement varied from nothing to 40% depending on the cabin (vs. having to pay the same amount as 2 people on Viking). They also were gracious and expert at accommodating the no gluten, no dairy pescatarian requirements of my traveling companion. The guides were superb, too.

Why would you not have Royal Caribbean listed?! It's got the best entertainment and newest ship, best casino program and best loyalty program!
Admin says:
Good point Patricia. We added that one in, and will count on a vote from you for that choice.
Tessa says:
Ocean cruise and river cruise companies should be separate polls, as they are very different from one another.
Editor's comment. That is a good point Tessa. We wrestled with that one and decided that 3 polls would be too many. Feel free to comment about either type and your favorites.

We've taken a number of ocean cruises (7-8?) over the past years and enjoyed them all. But we also decided the last was the "last one". Most in the Caribbean but one Mediterranean. The crowds, the "same old" tours, the lines and, on the most recent one last year, the noise -- the on deck music entertainment. I used to love relaxing to Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, etc. But the last cruise was almost completely rap/hip-hop stuff I don't like. We will probably do an Alaskan cruise and maybe a river cruise, but otherwise, just no. There's only so much food and liquor a person can take. That said, everyone should try it -- enjoy yourselves.

RichPB, We took an Alaskan cruise with a group of friends as a memorial to a husband who had died. That was one of the most memorable trips I have ever taken. Alaska is just so beautiful, the air is sooo clean, and nature everywhere. We did a helicopter tour to a glacier, and another to see the bald eagle nest that felt like we were on a National Geographic trip. My point, don't miss Alaska. I would take another in a heartbeat!!

Thanks to everyone who has voted in this poll so far! At this point Viking has a big lead over #2, Celebrity, Princess, and Holland American. Since Viking is more oriented towards river cruises, that is interesting. Some good write in votes too. Please VOTE if you haven't so we have the best possible data. The poll for where to go will come out in next few days.
Patricia Reynolds says:
I tried to change my vote from other to Royal but it just says I've already voted.
Editors comment: Thanks for voiting, I will change that for you.

Interesting article about how you might be able to get a last minute deal on cruises from Travel & Leisure. As low as $99/day if you go standby.
