Think You Have Travelled Everywhere? Think Again

Category: Travel

January 21, 2025 — A fortunate few well off and/or adventurous travelers might feel like there is nowhere else to go. Also, the places they enjoyed so much in the past, are now over run by cruise ships and package tours. Well if that is you, the NY Times list of “52 Places to Go” can easily solve that problem.

Reading their annual list with its mouth-watering descriptions and beautiful photos will send even the most well-travelled veteran into travel envy nirvanah. Even armchair travelers will get pumped up reading about them. One of the best parts of the list is that, even if you have visited countries like France and Spain many times in the past, here are great new places you probably have never considered.

Mountains on the Isle of Skye, Scotland

Many of these exciting destinations feature unusual things to do and see. Here are just a few:

Gigantic peat bogs in Scotland

Restored palatial train station in Spain’s Pyrenees

Italian mountain trail routes

Train ride through Taiwan mountains

Hip beach town in Kenya

Nyksund, Norway

Norway’s gorgeous Lofoten Islands

New cultural attractions in East London

Western Australia beaches and town

And 44 more!

Ubeda, Spain

Bottom line. Check out this New York Times special section. We guarantee you will see dozens of new travel experiences to dream about.

A couple of recent trips to central Vietnam were my most exotic. Vietnam has some large and modern cities. However, when you get beyond those and out into the countryside, there is much to see and do. One of those trips was for a wedding in a small remote village where westerners were so rare that villagers would come up and take our pictures. We were big news for the locals.

I have been fortunate to have visited many exotic places, the majority since I retired. In the natural wonders category I would rank Antarctica at the top (although it is at the bottom of the world), along with Africa. For exotic destinations I would rate India (where like LS experienced, locals in a small town took OUR pictures) and Japan right up there, so many different things to see and experience. Having spent a year in the Army in Vietnam, I would like to go back and see how it has changed, along with Thailand and Cambodia.

Easter Island - one of the world's most isolated, inhabited places. The moais and the history are incredible. Most exotic (and best) trip ever.
