The 30 Second Study That Shows How Well You Are Aging
Category: Health and Wellness Issues
Nov. 2, 2024 — Aging experts from the Mayo Clinic think they have found a simple way to test for how well people are aging. First, you stand on both legs for 30 seconds, eyes open, then 30 more with them closed. Then you stand on your dominate foot for 30 seconds, eyes open, then the non-dominate leg for 30 more.
The experts say that if you are in your 70s you lasted about 26 seconds. People in their 30s and 40s can usually stand on one leg for a minute. They say that if you are over 65 and can make it 30 seconds without having to put the other leg down you are doing well. What would be concerning is if you only last 5 seconds without tipping.
How well you do on this test is a good test of aging, with big implications about your ability to avoid falls, which result in over 1 million hospital visits each year for older adults. They say that exercise like walking, and practicing standing on one leg, are a good way to keep your mobility and avoid accidents.

I took the test with dear wife and 2 friends. We all could make it for 30 seconds, so great! Staying active feels like it paying off.

Here is an article about how to choose a personal trainer. I have used one and think she is very helpful. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/19/well/move/personal-trainer-aging.html?unlocked_article_code=1.WE4.hlsH.yRWopAf6uLhU&smid=url-share

I tried the above and cut each off after a full minute without tipping. I'm 72 and fairly active though never have been a gym rat or serious athlete, nor had a personal trainer.
My 5-10 minute daily exercise regimen includes pushups against a counter, stair climbing and squats. I also walk the neighborhood for 30 minutes most days.
p.s. Dominant, not dominate.
