Thanks for Your Patience: RE Annoying Google Ads
Category: Uncategorized
July 1, 2023 — We would like to thank all of our Members and visitors for their patience while we try to sort out why annoying Google ads appear when people click on Comments links in our Daily Alert. We have tried about everything, including turning off the type of ad that is showing up, called Vignette ads. The problem only occurs with people using iphones or ipads (not sure about Android). If you are on a desktop you won’t experience it.
Besides turning off Vignette ads we blocked ads on our Blog pages, yet they continue to appear. Next step, unless we can figure out some other way to stop these ads, is to stop being part of the Adsense network. Google help is of no help, and there is no way to contact a human being there (we’ve tried).
Carol wrote this today: FYI the situation with Google is getting worse. I have tried to open up both articles today five times, and every time I see the comments for a second and then Google overwrites it with their click-ads. I’m giving up for today, hoping that I will have better luck tomorrow. I think this is why you are seeing less participation.
A great retirement gift!
We responded: Thanks for letting us know. Yes, the situation is terrible and it seems like there is nothing I can do about it except completely eliminate Google Adsense, which up to now has been our major form of support. The problem doesn’t happen with desktop computers, so if you have that option you shouldn’t have any problem. Next week we hope to see what else we might do. Perhaps we could just show a link in the Daily Alert to Blog posts that have recent comments, and maybe the dreaded vignette ads won’t show up.

So sorry you’re having trouble with the Google ads. They’d be at least OK if you could back out of them and return to the blog. But mine are stuck once they pop up and won’t go away. The “back” icon is inoperable. Best wishes and on getting the situation back to normal.

This problem only occurs fir me on the “replies to blog posts” comments, while links to the articles themselves work fine. Perhaps you could ad a link to each article above the corresponding comments section and those of us with Apple devices could scroll down to the most recent comments until the problem is solved.

Jeez, type in haste, regret later…

Some good news here, so far! We made some changes and, so far, those annoying Vignette ads are not showing up on ipads and iphones when you click on a Blog Comment from the Daily Alert. We are not through testing yet, but feel good about our progress so far!

Hogging comments, but yesssssss it’s working, thanks!

In what we hope is the final chapter to this saga, the problem has been fixed. All Google Ads removed from mobile pages (ipads, iphones, etc.). That seem to resolve the issue. Whew!
Carol says:
Sorry to tell you this, but Google ads hijacked this article just now as I opened it the first time. Second time…success.

Let’s hope that was a cookie issue. All of our tests are coming up clean
