Don’t Worry Retiring Boomers – You Can Retire to Margaritaville

March 11, 2017 — Jimmy Buffett fans, not known for worrying, can keep relaxing. In fact they can now find that last shaker of salt in their very own active adult community. The first one of many to come, dubbed Latitude Margaritaville, will go online next year in Daytona Beach, Florida. Press releases say the sales center there will be open later this year with the first models available in early 2018.
Topretirements must have seen 10 press reports about this new community – there is a lot of excitement about it. Here is what John Cohlan, chief executive officer of Margaritaville said about the new communities: “With Minto’s (the developer) expertise in creating master planned developments and Margaritaville’s inherent ability to deliver fun and escapism, Latitude Margaritaville has the exact coordinates for those looking to live the Margaritaville lifestyle as they grow older, but not up.”
Promised amenities at this community near the intersection of Interstate 95 and LPGA Boulevard sound perfect for Parrot Heads. Residents can enjoy Margaritaville-brand food and beverage concepts such as the Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant and Five O’Clock Somewhere bar with indoor and outdoor dining options. Fortunately, residents can work off those burgers and beers at an aerobics studio, fitness center, indoor lap pool, spa, and group fitness classes. The community will have walkable neighborhoods and a Town Center. Homes will be built for aging in place.
Naturally there will be a band shell for live entertainment – and we are guessing somebody special might occasionally even show up! Residents are promised access to a private beachfront club via continuous shuttle service.
Minto also owns Sun City Center of Tampa, another 55+ community.
We hope life works out there as well as Jimmy Buffett once said: “Shells sink, dreams float. Life’s good on our boat. ”

I live north of Daytona Beach. Just played a tennis match on LPGA Boulevard yesterday. The visitor center is under construction. I'll be able to provide updates as the community progresses.

I don't often manage to stay up late enough to watch his show, but last night Stephen Colbert did a comedy rif on the new Margaritaville 55+ community. I don't know if it was a re-run. I did a quick search to see if it was on YouTube or another source yet, but couldn't find it. If you can locate the clip, it was very funny.

I love Stephen Colbert, but he referred to this community as "assisted living." It's actually an active adult community - big difference.
By the way, I'm not a realtor, so I have no stake in this community. Just write books and articles about retirement, and happen to live about 30 miles north of it. It's received a lot of press. There was a sign by the site where they are building the visitor center - it said homes starting in the $200,000s.
Editor's Note: Thanks Jan for the update, always appreciated. Yes, we noticed the "Assisted Living" slip too. Same thing happens when we talk to 30-somethings about retirement communities - they don't get active adult communities and are really thinking old folks homes.

I don't know it it's just me but just once I would love to see a new development start in the very low $100s. My definition of low is $110,000 and up.
It's very frustrating to see starting prices in the $200s and up.

All those parrot-heads in one place - would be party party party all night every night... Will we get to be too old for this at some point and have to move to a quieter place?
One thing for sure - most parrot-heads are likely to have very loud music and total disregard for the fact that some of the oldsters may need sleep. All the homes should have golf cart storage - you wouldn't want us to be in cars.
The community will probably need a bar on every corner - just like the days before prohibition. They would serve Cheeseburgers, margaritas, wings, pretzels and all the bad food you can think of. Right next to the bars should be exercise facilities/pools. All those calories might pack on a lot of extra pounds.
I'm signed up, despite my protestations I would never live in Florida ... being a parrot-head has been too great a time for me. Living it full-time ... WOW

Will they all be individual homes (starting at $200,00) or will there also be other options such as smaller villas or condos for a lower price?? What will be the rental requirements/restrictions?
Could this be a second home for snow birds??

Sounds like fun, but my idea of active community is playing tennis with Jan 4-5 times a week. Why can't these "active" communities offer more sports...at least pickleball, but tennis is practically a must for us. Very few communities with enough court sports. If anyone knows of some good ones, I'd love to hear about them. Thanks!
