Best Places for a Wintery Retirement
Category: Best Retirement Towns and States
We’ve got to hand it to Yahoo, nobody comes up with more “best” and “worst” lists than the search giant. This week they announced their “10 Winter Wonderlands Retirement“. Their chief criteria were the likelihood of having lots of snow on the ground for most of the winter, along with cost of living, access to medical care, and availability of other amenities.
Here is their list:
Juneau, AK
Aurora, Colo.
Burlington, Vt.
Juneau, Alaska
Manchester, N.H.
Marquette, Mich.
Minneapolis, Minn.
Portland, Maine
Salt Lake City, Utah
South Bend, Ind.
Syracuse, N.Y.
Comments: The Yahoo list is a pretty good one, although almost all of their choices are fairly good-sized cities. We definitely like their choices of Portland (ME), Salt Lake City (UT), Manchester (NH),and Burlington (VT). We might add some other towns that aren’t necessarily going to be white all winter, but have plenty of the powdery stuff at their doorsteps (very much like Salt Lake City, which rarely has snow on the ground although it snows and snows just outside of town). Those include Durango (CO), Albuquerque (NM), Missoula (MT), and Tahoe (CA).
Everyone has their own taste. Fortunately for those who love winter, there has been plenty of it this year. But for many others, their idea of a winter wonderland is not a cup of tea by the fire, but rather a round of golf or a day at the beach in South Florida.
What do you think?

I live in Portsmouth, NH. Whoever put Manchester, NH on this list must not have visited there. Manchester, for the most part, has very little to offer. Don't forget that there are other seasons besides winter. You'll want things to do during the other seasons. Portsmouth, NH has so much to offer, I'm not sure where to begin! Besides being a quaint, seaport town, we have excellent restaurants, two fabulous restaurant weeks, various festivals such as Market Square Day, First Night, and Prescott Park Arts Festival, a fabulous performing arts venue called The Music Hall, which hosts live concerts, plays, and writers (such as Stephen King, Dan Brown, Jodi Picoult), the Seacoast Repertory Theater, Strawbery Banke Museum, and much much more. We are on the seacoast, so we have beaches nearby, and we are only 1 hour from Boston, Portland, Maine and ski areas. We have three airports within 1 hour (Boston, Portland, ME, and Manchester, NH). I'm not sure what else anybody could ask for, other than less snow and a warmer climate, but this article is for people who don't mind the cold and snow. Maybe someone from Manchester can weigh in and let you know what they have to offer, but in my mind, there is no contest!!!
