When Your Community Goes Bankrupt

Welcome to our occasional weekend newsletter, which focuses on interesting active adult and 55+ communities and the issues surrounding them.

The Village at Penn State filed for bankruptcy last week. The photo above shows the main campus at Penn State, which has an affiliation with The Village.

Featured Article:
As if State College hadn't enough bad news lately, The Village at Penn State filed for bankruptcy last week. This well known CCRC leases land from Penn State. Although initial indications are that the event will result in a smooth landing for TVPS residents, it highlights the bewildering array of bad things that can happen when an active adult community goes bankrupt. This article outlines what can go wrong, and what you might do about it.

We invite you to explore more communities - there are over 1500 in this directory:

Leisure Village West - Manchester, NJ
If you are an active community, it must be tempting to put "Leisure" in your name. In fact we have 10 Leisure Villages and Leisure Worlds reviewed at Topretirements. Leisure Village West isn't all that west, it's in New Jersey. But it has been around a long time and boasts extensive facilities. It is popular with people from the New York metropolitan area.

On Top of the World - Ocala, Florida
Our newest Showcase Listing has been mentioned frequently in our blog posts as a great place to live. It's big (13,000 acres) and well established (over 60 years). Energy efficient homes are a feature, so are its lifelong education programs.

Verrado - Buckeye, Arizona
Here is a huge new urban-style community located west of Phoenix. Planned using
small town principles, it hopes for 11,000 homes along with a town center and its own recreational facilities.
