Pictured above: Street scene in beautiful Charleston, SC. Welcome to our occasional weekend newsletter, which focuses on interesting active adult and 55+ communities and the issues attached to them. Exploring South Carolina Active Communities South Carolina is one of the most popular states for retirement, so it is no accident that it has many active adult communities to choose from. You can find communities in its famous Low Country: on the beach (as in Myrtle Beach), in resort areas (Hilton Head), and near charming cities (Charleston). Further inland there are developments near lakes (Lake Keowee), and in the mountains (northwest of Greenville). While we can't possibly provide more than a small sampling from the 59 community reviews we have in our South Carolina Directory, these 3 communities - an environmentally friendly, a budget, and a new urban - will give a flavor for what awaits you in SC. The first thing that attracted us to this community is that is was built to be green - the developer is an Energy Star Partner. Chukker Creek might appeal to people who are not ordinarily attracted to active communities. That's because it has larger lots, no golf, and you can even keep your horse in the community's stables. Reasonably priced as well. If budget concerns are near the top of your list, you might want to take a look at Ocean Pines in southern Myrtle Beach. This community of manufactured homes from Jensen Communities offers a clubhouse, a pool, and organized activities. Add to that a great location not far from the beach, Murrells Inlet, and the 100+ golf courses in the area. Resales from $27,000.
