What It Is Like to Retire in Da nang
Da Nang is one of the major port cities in Vietnam and the biggest city on the South Central Coast of Vietnam. The city is situated on the coast of the South China Sea and is a commercial and educational center of Central Vietnam, with a well-sheltered, easily accessible port. The population is just under 1 million. Its beaches are reported to be the best in Vietnam. Those made it a preferred in-country destination for American GIs during the Vietnam War. .Where to Retire in Da nang and Home Prices
A recent article in the Huffington Post touted Danang as great place to retire based on its many available and inexpensive rentals. They pointed out a fully furnished two-bedroom, two-bath luxury condo in the Indochina Riverside Tower complex is available for $700/month. It is located in a prime spot near the riverside promenade in central Danang. A fully furnished 4 bedroom house with terrace and garden within a 5 minute walk to the beach was available for $750. There are also inexpensive beach villas. The Azura is a luxury condo near the Han River Bridge. Foreigners cannot own real estate, although you can qualifiy for a 50 year lease on land and then build a house on it.

What Is Not Special about Da nang
Vietnam is still a 3rd world country so you can't expect all of the comforts and protections of home. Air pollution is usually very bad and so is the traffic - traffic accident fatalities are high.
Who Will Like Retirement in Da nang
People who want to live in an exciting and beautiful city in Asia at a relatively low cost. Former GIs might feel quite comfortable here.
Local Economy Is Driven by
Tourism, shipping from the port, and manufacturing are very important. It is the leading industrial part of the country.
Climate and Physical Environment
Da Nang is fairly close to the Equator on the South China Sea, so the temperature does not change much during the year. It is on the coast about half way up the country. The average daily temperature tends to be in the mid 60s to low 90s. The rainy season starts in September and goes to March - then you can expect brief but intense deluges every day.
Restaurants & Cultural Scene
There is a wide variety of cuisines, from local to western. The latter tends to be much more expensive. There is a legacy of French cuisine as well as Chinese. The University scene provides some local culture.
Crime
Da Nang is a relatively safe city although there is street crime.
Medical facilities
As one of Vietnam's largest cities it has several hospitals. You can expect reasonable medical care.
Transportation
Traffic is intense and crowded with cars and motorcycles. The international airport is convenient. Foreigners cannot drive a car unless they have a Vietnamese driving license (not needed for a motorcycle). There is growing passenger ship traffic to the city.
