Freehold is a historical town with a past that is rich in American Revoulion History. Monmouth Battlefield, where one of the largest battles took place, is now a preserved State Park for hiking, horseback riding or picnicing. Many of the buildings in town date back to the 1800's. The oldest building is St. Peter's Episcopal Church built in 1683. The Freehold Township Heritage Society helps to preserve and promote the town's historical past, and sponsers two annual festivals with Civil War re-enactors, farmhouse tours, along with weaving, and wool spinning demonstrations. Freehold is also home to Freehold Raceway, the nation's first harness racing track, which was opened in 1853, and still operates today. The town also offers dining, antique galleries and a large mall.
