Hagerstown is a growing community in northwestern Maryland, not far from the PA and WV borders. It is located on the old National Highway, US 40, and very near Interstates 68 and 81.  The town is important because of its strategic location and the roads and railroads that go through it (its nickname is the "Hub City"). Now it is more rural and does attract some tourists. The population was just over 40,000 in 2013. There are numerous parks and museums, many of them connected to the historic civil war battlefieds (Battle of Antietam was fought nearby). The Maryland Theatre plays host to the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. The city also has the Washington County Playhouse. The new Academy Theatre Banquet & Conference Center, located downtown, houses the community theater group Potomac Playmakers.

Crime rate is slightly below average.

Meritus Medical Center provides emergency services, while nearby Waynesboro (PA) and Martinsburg (WV) provide additional medical services.
