The city was named for North Carolina’s General Daniel Newnan, and in mid-1800 was considered one of the wealthiest cities in the country. Today, it has a diverse population of 42,549, (2020 census), which reflects a growth of over 167% since 2000, and with the average age of 35 years. Three institutions of higher education are located in Newnan, which include West Georgia Technical College, the University of West Georgia, and Mercer University, which has a regional academic center in Newnan. Several television series and movies were filmed here including October Road, The Founder, and The Hunger Games: mockingjay-Part 1. It offers museums, parks, trails, the arts, and a Carnegie Library that opened in 1904, with a grant from Andrew Carnegie, and may be the oldest surviving Carnegie Library in the state of Georgia. The town also features the LINC, a multi-use paved path system for bicycles and pedestrians.

It is also home to the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts, and the Newnan Theatre Company. Chattahoochee Bend State Park, and Ashley Park shopping mall are also located here. There are also Civil War and Revolutionary War sites which include Oak Hill Cemetery in which soldiers from those wars are buried. The town is also home to one of the few museums in Georgia that features African-American history, and The Farmer Street Cemetery, the largest slave cemetery in the South, For a variety of restaurants and cultural events you can head to Atlanta, just an hour away.
