Staunton(pronounced Stanton), is a small college town in western Virginia. It is located in the Shenandoah Valley in between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains of the Appalachian Mountains. The population is 24,000. An old trading and manufacturing center, It is chiefly known for being the birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson. There is a popular museum about him along with a display of his Pierce-Arrow automobile. Mary Baldwin University is located adjacent to the Museum. The downtown is compact and has an unusual mix of interesting restaurants and shops. There is one story devoted to Bass (string) instruments, another to exotic tobacco and pipes, a rubber duck store, and multiple antique stores of all stripes. Southern Living called the town "one of the prettiest and most progressive (towns) in the south".
