Lexington is a small town with a rich history on the western border of the state.  A college town, Lexington is the home of two prestigious colleges, Washington & Lee University and Virginia Military Institute (VMI). The George C. Marshall Foundation is here. Both Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are buried here. The Stonewall Jackson House is now a Museum. Tourism and education are important. There is a nice Historic District in the charming downtown.  The population is just under 7,000. The Lexington Golf & Country Club has a nice 18 hole golf course.

Lexington has an amazing history for such a small town. Three major military figures have ties to Lexington - Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and George Marshall.  Robert E. Lee is buried in Lee Chapel on the Washington & Lee campus, his horse Traveler is buried just outside the chapel. The presence of 2 great colleges is another distinction. Parts of several movies were filmed here including most recently "Gods and Generals" and "War of the Worlds".

Lexington is halfway down the state on the western border with West Virginia. The median January low temperature is in the low 20's and the median July high is in the high 80's.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Cafe Michel, the Southern Inn and The Palms offer excellent dining. There are 2 theaters: the Theater at Lime Kiln and the Lenfest Center for the Performing Arts at W & L.  The Stonewall Jackson House is a museum. The George C. Marshall Foundation on the campus of VMI houses a library, archive, a museum and administrative offices dedicated to honor the legacy of George Catlett Marshall, General of the Army and author of the Marshall Plan for European WWII recovery. The birthplace of Sam Houston is nearby, as are the Boxerwood Gardens. The Rockbridge County Library is well supported.

Crime

The crime rate is extremely low.

Medical facilities

Stonewall Jackson Hospital serves Lexington, and there are other hospitals in nearby towns like Roanoke and Lynchburg.

Transportation

Interstate 81 goes through town.
