Stellenbosch University is one of the leading universities of the country with many prime ministers as graduates. The school has 29,000 students. The area population is over 77,000; most people are white and speak Afrikaans. It is located in the Cape Winelands, which is one of South Africa's two main wine producing areas. The downtown is very sophisticated with fancy shops, restaurants, and wine tasting rooms. Many tourists come here as part of the Stellenbosch Wine Route.

Climate and Physical Environment
It is 53 km east of Cape Town along the N1. The temperature is mild year round with temps only into the 40s in winter (July) and 70s or 80s in January. There are several mountains in the area including Victoria Peak at over 5,000'. Jonkershoek Nature Reserve lies about 9 km (5.6 mi) east of Stellenbosch.

There are many restaurants to choose from as this is both a college and a tourist town on the wine trail.
