What It Is Like to Retire in Sedgefield

Sedgefield is a peaceful town of 8,200 on the southeast coast of South Africa.  It was settled in the 1920's when it was advertised as the new winter resort. The town’s motto of being a place where ‘the tortoise sets the pace’ will give you an idea why it is popular for retirees looking for a good place to retire. The Wild Oats market attracts tourists and residents from the region every Saturday morning with offerings of fresh produce and local crafts. A golf course (the ‘Fynbos Links’), tennis court and bowls field caters to the significant portion of retired permanent residents of the town. Nearby George is the administrative and commercial centre of the region.

Where to Retire in Sedgefield and Home Prices

You can live near the sea or in the hills overlooking it. A 2013 review of a Sedegfield real estate site found a 1 BR apt for 399,000 R, a 2 BR home for 690,000 R, and a 4 BR home at the upper end for 4,900,00 R. The Rand converts at .097 of the U.S. dollar, so it would appear real estate is fairly inexpensive by U.S. and European standards.
