Peebles is located on the Tweed river west of Edinburgh with a population of approximately 8,000. It was named one of best independent retail shopping towns in Scotland. There are many cute stores and a great number of beautiful churches. The Peebles Hydro Spa and Resort is a grand old place on the hill where people used to come to bathe in cold spring waters (hence the name Hydro). This is an old textile area. The area and town provide many services for its citizens and there are many volunteers. The people who live here to be very healthy looking, with hiking and biking very popular activities.
Initially a market town, Peebles played a role in the woollen industry of the Borders during the 19th and early-20th centuries. Most mills closed by the 1960s, although the last one remained open until 2015.

There are single family homes and some apartments in the town that would be good for retirees. You can rent "self-catered" (provide your own food) homes and cottages and use as a base to explore the area.

Lovely shops and restaurants to explore. There are paths for walking and biking. This is an old town and there is a beautiful scene around every corner. Notable buildings in the town include the Old Parish Church of Peebles and Neidpath Castle. The oldest building in Peebles is the tower of St Andrew's Church. The church was founded in 1195. It was destroyed (along with many other Borders abbeys and priories) by the soldiers of Henry VIII.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene
The annual local festival in Peebles is called the Beltane, and involves (as with many Borders festivals) a Common Riding. The Beltane, proclaimed at the cross, culminates with the crowning of the Beltane Queen. There are many restaurants as this is a popular area with tourists. There is also a big celebration at the summer solstice with bagpipers and a parade. In 2014 Creative Scotland named Peebles the most creative place of its size in Scotland. Most arts performances take place in the Eastgate Theatre on the High Street which has a year-round programme of music, drama, dance, talks and classes for children and adults. The town has four major annual festivals - the Beltane Festival, Peebles Arts Festival, Tweedlove Bike Festival and Imaginarium.

The crime rate is very low in this small village.

Hay Lodge Hospital has a 23 bed ward. It supports acute hospital services and provides services to meet local health needs. Hay Lodge Medical Center is a clinic. Borders General Hospital is the regional hospital in Melrose.
Transportation
Peebles is no longer connected to the railway system, although there are nearby train stations. Some people commute by car to Edinburgh. There is good bus service.
