Southern Pines is a charming and beautiful town in North Carolina, just east of Pinehurst in the south central portion of the state. The population is just over 15,500 (2020). What makes it so attractive is a bit ironic, since a major railroad line runs down the center of town. But the tracks are landscaped in a wide buffer, and along both sides of town are cute shops and pretty homes. There are coffee shops, restaurants, and a very good independent bookstore. Radiating off of the main drag are cute side streets with beautiful homes. There is an Amtrak station in the center of town. You can live in the charming town of Southern Pines and walk to about anything (good walkability). On the other hand there are many active developments in the area, many of them focused on golf. It is a very pretty town with a wonderful downtown that has about everything you need. It is also golf country, with nearby Pinehurst being a shrine to the sport.

NC real estate is fairly pricey. Reported crime in Southern Pines is well above average according to City-Data.com, although the people who live here say it is a very safe place and the crime confined to lower income areas.

Climate and Physical Environment
Southern Pines is in Moore County near the south central portion of the state. Aberdeen and Sanford are nearby larger towns. Charlotte is to the west and Fayetteville to the east. The median January low is 30 degrees and the median July high is 90.
Restaurants & Cultural Scene
There are several good restaurants in and around town. Nearby Pinehurst is a big resort and offers some great choices for dining. The Southern Pines Public Library is well stocked and supported. There are galleries downtown.
Crime
Reported crime is above average, but it seems mostly confined to thefts and burglaries. Local residents report they feel very safe and are surprised by the reported crime.
Medical facilities
Firsthealth Moore Regional Hospital is in Pinehurst. Other hospitals are within 25 miles in Fayetteville and Sanford.
Transportation
There is an Amtrak stop in the center of town. Fayetteville and Charlotte have the biggest nearby airports.
