Matthews is a fast growing town on the border of South Carolina in the central portion of the state. In 2012, the population was about 29,000 - up dramatically from the 2000 census. It is close to Charlotte so some people commute from here, although there is a considerable amount of industry. Hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, recreational facilities and a hospital are in town. The National Register of Historic Places listed 10 downtown buildings in Matthews, a remarkably intact, collection of structures dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Healthcare, Banking, and Retail distribution are the primary industries in the Matthews area. Large distribution facility for Family Dollar, a hospital and several medical compounds along with branch offices for several banks probably account for most of the local jobs.
Climate and Physical Environment
Climate is mild but there are definitely 4 seasons. Median Winter temp is around 30o and median Summer temp is around 88-90o. People in Matthews love to landscape. Lots of old growth, expansive trees, flowering shrubs, make for a lush environment. Extensive greenway and park system provide walking/biking trails.

There is a library in the new town hall. The Matthews Alive Festival is a Labor Day weekend celebration dedicated to the support of local non-profit organizations through music, arts and community involvement. ArtFest comes along in October. The Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts has an active schedule along with classes. The Levine Senior Center offers an extensive program for members. There is a diverse assortment of restaurants within a 5 mile radius of the historic district. A local Farmers Market is open every Saturday.
