Ocean City, Maryland (year round population about 7,000) is a popular resort and retirement community for active adults who enjoy the beach, fishing, boating and a family oriented setting. This beach community in southeastern Maryland has been a popular family resort since the late 1800’s. In May and June graduating seniors come here by the thousands to celebrate their release from school. In 2001 it was designated an All-America City. The town offers 11 miles of sandy beaches on the Atlantic Ocean, stretching all the way to Delaware. There is a long boardwalk lined with amusement parks and commercial establishments. Golf has become very important here with more than a dozen golf clubs in the area. There are hotels, motels, homes, and condominiums by the thousands. There are also a number of charitable and fraternal organizations that can be joined. The beach setting guarantees visiting grandchildren will want to come here. One of the attractions for active adults 55+ is the ability to live near Maryland's beaches. The average age of the year round residents is 57, reflecting its popularity as a retirement community. There are many high rise condos on the beach and active adult communities elsewhere. Many of the latter are golf-oriented. Zillow reports the average home price in mid-2023 was $428,990. These prices can be somewhat misleading as prices will vary dramatically by location and type of unit.

The sands and land keep shifting, and numerous beach erosion projects have attempted to protect existing buildings from the relentless ocean.

Disabled patrons can take advantage of the ADA Paratransit Curb-to-Curb Service, and A Senior Resident Bus Pass is available to Ocean City residents. Ocean city is about average in walkability when compared to other communities.
