What It Is Like to Retire in Camden
This little, colonial classic New England seaport is a popular summer town for New Yorkers and Bostonians and still retains much of its 19th century charm. Camden is set midway along Maine's coast and is postcard perfect - a lot like Bar Harbor but much nearer to the rest of the Northeast. For retirees who can afford to live in 2 places, Camden is the ideal summer/fall location. It has a lovely but small downtown, and residential streets with beautiful houses. Boaters find Camden particularly appealing. Where to Retire in Camden and Home Prices
We were unable to find any active adult communities in the area. There are however many lovely neighborhoods with rambling Shingle Style "cottages", Victorians, and more along High Street, Bay View Street and on Beauchamp Point. There may also be some condo projects in the area. Real estate is expensive: the median home value was $614,677 in mid-2023, according to Zillow.
What Is Special about Camden
Camden's Public Library is award winning, with its own amphitheatre, famous author lectures and book readings, book fairs, concerts, and movie screenings, among much else. Mt. Battie also provides plenty of outdoor adventure, like hiking and camping. Camden Hills State Park and Moose Park are also two fun attractions.

Camden has warm summers and cold winters. The average January temperature is 25 degrees, July's average is 66 degrees.
Restaurants & Cultural Scene
Camden has plenty of art festivals, Christmas by the Sea, the prestigious Camden Conference bringing together world leaders in the ampitheatre, and the Toboggan Nationals, among many artistic and event draws of the town. The Camden Public Library is first rate with many programs and resources. The Hartstone Inn Restaurant serves seasonal menus and exquisite wines.

Camden's crime rate is about half the national average.
Medical facilities
Pen Bay Medical Center is located in nearby Rockport. Portland is not that far away for bigger hospitals.
