Homosassa and its neighboring sister, Homasassa Springs are small towns (less than 3,000 people) on the northern part of Florida's west coast.  This "Big Bend" area of Florida is proudly referred to as the "Nature Coast".  The average age is quite high, 60, indicating a significant retiree population.  The area is notable for outstanding wildlife viewing at the Homasassa Springs State Park, although it does not receive as much tourist attention as other areas. Early on Homoassas was home to a large orange plantation and sugar mill that was run by slave labor. Now that site is the  Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins State Historic Site.

Homosassa is a top spot for nature viewing in Florida, particularly for Manatees.  The Homosassa Springs State Park is a popular park with nature exhibits. This part of Florida is a lot more relaxed and less crowded than many other parts.  Homosassa is on the Gulf of Mexico. Being part of the Nature Coast is a distinction.


What Is Not Special about Homosassa

Some parts of town might be a bit too southern for people moving here from the north. There are some tacky parts, particularly along Rt 19 as it goes through Homosassa Springs.

There is some tourism but in general Homosassa has a pretty low key economy.

Climate and Physical Environment

Homosassa is on the west coast of Florida just before the coastline starts running north and south. It is 60 miles north of Tampa. There are a number of lakes and coastal inlets. The average July high temperature is 92 and the average January low is 45. July is the wettest month with 4.3".


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins State Historic Site  is a  local attraction.  In general, nature is the top local cultural attraction. Tampa is an hour way with plenty to do there.

Medical facilities

Seven Rivers Community Hospital in Crystal Springs is the nearest hospital (about 13 miles).

Transportation

The Sun Coast Highway is a toll highway with excellent service south to Tampa from here. Tampa has a great airport just 60 miles away.
