London, the capital city of England, stands on the River Thames and is the most populous city in England and the United Kingdom. It is also one of the most visited (and expensive) cities in the world, and is considered to be a world cultural capital, financial center, and home to over 40 schools of higher education. The Greater London Authority estimated the population to be over 8 million in 2015, with a diverse range of peoples and cultures, and over 300 languages spoken. The city has hosted the Summer Olympics three times, most recently in 2012, and one of London's best known sporting events, the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, is held each year at the All England Club. London boasts several modes of transportaion including the Tube, the oldest and one of the longest metro systems in the world, buses, trams, and a major international airport hub. Cycling is also a popular way to get around.
