The downtown area, which is referred to as the Borough, features two lovely long streets with many good restaurants and interesting shops. There is a big public beach right there, along with the Stonington Harbor Light, the first lighthouse established by the federal government. The surrounding streets are lined with former sea captain's mansions and many public buildings.  Stonington, which has a busy harbor, is a very popular tourist destination, as well as home to many retirees. The town includes portions of Mystic, Old Mystic, Lords Point, and Pawcatuck. The median age is a quite high at 58.
