What It Is Like to Retire in Sun city

Sun City is one of the first active adult communities in the world, and certainly the most famous. This particular Sun City is an unincorporated community near Peoria, Arizona - about 15 miles northwest of Phoenix. It has an endless amount of amenities and activities.  Sun City has 48,000 residents. It was founded by Del Webb in 1960.  Every conceivable activity - 8 recreation centers, 8 golf courses, 3 country clubs, 2 bowling centers, Sun Bowl, and Viewpoint Lake. There are people who love Sun City (the folks who live here), and those who hate the idea of all those retired people living together and engaging in non-stop fun and activities.  Most of the people who try it like it. Among the reasons for  moving here is the ease with which you can find new friends, its relatively low cost, the easy living, and the endless list of things you can do with your time. What Is Not Special about Sun city

There is an active volunteer HOA (Home Owners Association) with rules and regulations to protect the experience. There is  a general rule of thumb that the age of the residents in an active adult community corresponds to the age of the facility - since Sun City is the original active retirement community it is not a surprise that the median age is 74.
