What It Is Like to Retire in Sun city
Sun City is one of the first active adult communities in the world, and certainly the most famous. This particular Sun City is an unincorporated community near Peoria, Arizona - about 15 miles northwest of Phoenix. It has an endless amount of amenities and activities. Sun City has 48,000 residents. It was founded by Del Webb in 1960. Every conceivable activity - 8 recreation centers, 8 golf courses, 3 country clubs, 2 bowling centers, Sun Bowl, and Viewpoint Lake. There are people who love Sun City (the folks who live here), and those who hate the idea of all those retired people living together and engaging in non-stop fun and activities. Most of the people who try it like it. Among the reasons for moving here is the ease with which you can find new friends, its relatively low cost, the easy living, and the endless list of things you can do with your time. What Is Special about Sun city
Sun City claims that it is the first planned active retirement community. This community is huge and has something for everyone, with an amazing array of facilities and amenities. Residents pay no school taxes.
What Is Not Special about Sun city
There is an active volunteer HOA (Home Owners Association) with rules and regulations to protect the experience. There is a general rule of thumb that the age of the residents in an active adult community corresponds to the age of the facility - since Sun City is the original active retirement community it is not a surprise that the median age is 74.

Climate and Physical Environment
There are endless neighborhoods laid out around man-made lakes and golf courses. Sun City is in the Arizona desert with hills in the background, mountains not far away. Winters are generally warm, although it can occasionally get chilly for a few days. Summers are brutally hot.
Restaurants & Cultural Scene
Sun City has endless entertainment possibilities, particularly with the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts in nearby Wickenburg. And if you exhaust those, you can go into Phoenix which has all the cultural resources of the major city it is.
Crime
Crime here is relatively low.
Medical facilities
The Banner Boswell Hospital & Medical Center, located in the center of Sun City, offers physicians in all specialties with emphasis on heart, orthopedic & geriatric medicine.
Transportation
Golf carts are a preferred method of transportation in Sun City. The Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport is just a short trip away. Sun City is not considered a walkable community.
